WINGS OF FIRE Animated Series in Development at Amazon MGM Studios

An animated series adaptation of the book series Wings of Fire is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. This is a second attempt to develop this story as a series after Netflix previously ordered a 10-episode series with Ava DuVernay attached to executive produce. This ended up being one of the several other animated projects at Netflix that was scrapped.

The official logline for the series reads: “Five young dragons have been raised in secret, destined by prophecy to end a terrible war. But when one of their own is threatened, they decide to escape and find their own fate—saving themselves and the rest of their world along the way.”

The story is centered around a bitter war that has raged for generations between the dragon tribes who inhabit the epic world of Pyrrhia. According to prophecy, five young dragons will rise to end the bloodshed and bring peace back to the land. Raised and trained in secret from the time they were hatched, the Dragonets of destiny – Clay, Tsunami, Glory, Starflight, and Sunny – embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of this savage war they are destined to bring to an end.

There are fifteen books in the Wings of Fire book series, which comes from author Tui T. Sutherland. Amazon MGM Studios is going to put together a whole new creative team for the series, but as of right now, no writer is attached. Marc Resteghini (Jack Ryan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will executive produce the project.

There are 15 books in the main “Wings of Fire” novel collection, with multiple supplementary books and a graphic novel version. First published by Scholastic in 2012, the books have sold over 27 million copies across the world and have been on the New York Times best seller list for over 240 weeks.

Resteghini was previously the head of series development at Amazon MGM Studios (then Amazon Studios), but left the company in 2022 amid restructuring. He first joined Amazon in 2014 and developed and launched shows like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Jack Ryan,” and “The Underground Railroad” during his tenure.
