Robert Rodriguez Reflects on His Experience Playing in the STAR WARS Universe

It must be a cool experience for anyone to get the rare opportunity to get to play in the Star Wars universe. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez was brought into the Star Wars fold and directed one episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 as well as executive produced The Book of Boba Fett. He also helmed three episodes of that. As you might imagine, he loved his experience!

During a recent interview with Total Film and GamesRadar+, Rodriguez was asked Rodriguez about The Book of Boba Fett, and when reflecting on his experience developing it, he said:

"I loved working on that one, and Mandalorian was just the most fun I could ever have making anything. Because, also, it was right during COVID. Nobody was filming, so I would have just been sitting at home, and instead I got to go play with Star Wars characters. [Laughs] It was just a blast. John Favreau and Dave Filoni were just the best partners, they came up with all these incredible stories."

Rodriguez went on to talk about how working on these projects made him feel like a kid, and the magic that came along with being involved with these Star Wars projects:

"It felt like being a kid, but the magic doesn't go away. Even though you know how it's done, you see puppets and you see the strings, it still blows your mind. It's all from the world. They have so many artists that were on the original Star Wars movies that it doesn't lose its look. And so you could walk on a set and you'd feel like you were right there. I wouldn't trade that for anything. It was super fun, super exciting."

While it’s cool to hear that Rodriguez had a great time playing in the Star Wars sandbox, most fans seem to agree that all the episodes he directed were the worst ones in the shows he worked on. I’ll be honest, I was expecting more from him.

Rodriguez has made some great films, and one of his best was Alita: Battle Angel. He also confirmed in the interview that he has been in talks with James Cameron and Jon Landau for an Alita: Battle Angel sequel.
