New GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Footage Screened at WonderCon and It Brought the Emotion
This weekend Warner Bros. presented a panel at WonderCon, and director Michael Dougherty showed up to talk about Godzilla: King of the Monsters and show us some new footage from the film.
When talking about the movie, Dougherty explained that this is the movie that will put the “God” back into Godzilla. When developing this film they were looking to treat treat these titans as the ancient deities that they are.
I think this has come off in the trailers that we’ve seen for the film, but the best trailer for the movie that I’ve seen probably won’t even be released before the film hits theaters.
During the panel, WB shared a five-minute exclusive trailer that was so big, epic, and powerful that it actually brought tears to my eyes. It was a beautiful trailer that was filled with some incredibly epic jaw-dropping footage.
The new footage screened started off with Vera Farmiga’s character with Millie Bobby Brown setting explosives up on an ice wall where a military base has been set up. They obviously aren’t supposed to be there. Behind the ice wall is King Ghidorah, who is trapped.
After the explosives are set, Farmiga and Brown get on a helicopter with a crew of people, and as they fly away Farmiga detonates the explosives and unleashing the Titan on the world. As you might imagine, the military personnel left to deal with it and die in the process are wondering what in the hell is going on!
As chaos ensues and King Ghidorah makes his glorious introduction, Farmiga’s character sends a signal out with sounds from a device, and this must be a way to call Godzilla because then Godizilla races into action and rises from under the ice. He faces off with King Ghidorah, and they are about to fight.
I’m not completely sure why King Ghidorah was released, but I imagine Farmiga has her reasons, which we will learn in the film. It was revealed that Brown, Farmiga, and Chandler are a broken family of survivors of the events of the 2014 film.
We also see a bunch of quick clips from the film of the monsters causing all kinds of epic destruction and chaos! One of the coolest moments is when King Ghidorah blasts freakin’ lightning fire from its mouths, disintegrating people. We also see him and Godzilla basting at each other with their atomic rays. They just showed so many incredible scenes showing the various monsters in all of their epically majestic glory.
As a longtime Godzilla fan, it wasn’t hard to get all emotional as I watch the footage unfold. It was truly awesome, and I hope that it eventually is released online for all of you to see!
This film follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will hit theaters on May 31, 2019.
