Major Unexpected Marvel Characters Confirmed for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
During the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 press event, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and director James Gunn confirmed some major characters that will be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the highly anticipated sequel. Before I go any further, I have to tell you that this is a MAJOR SPOILER! Don't read ahead if you don't want to know what this is all about. But if your curiosity gets the better of you, by all means... check it out! Just don't yell at me after!
As we already know, Sylvester Stallon plays Stakar a.k.a. Starhawk, who is one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy from the comics. Well, He's not the only original Guardian joining the movie!
I saw the characters myself when I saw the movie, and I wouldn't have said anything had Feige and Gunn not officially confirmed it at the press event, but they did... after a little reluctance. Feige confirmed that you will "definitely" meet the "original Guardians". It was an incredibly cool and unexpected reveal while watching the movie. Feige went on to say:
“That was the fun of it and when James had the idea to do more with the Yondu character, who is also an original Guardian, there was the notion that he had a team once like Peter does now. That’d be fun to see them."
It has yet to be seen if we will see these characters again in a future film, but it would be awesome if we did! I think the fans would love it! Gunn commented on the possibility of seeing them again, saying:
"With all the post-credits scenes on this movie, they’re all funny and fun, and most of them are things we hope to see continue on in the MCU. Whether that’s a supporting role in future movies or whatever, I think it would be great to see those things and those characters show up."
The team even got their own epic team shot in the movie. The characters confirmed at the event include Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord, Ving Rhames as Charlie-27, Michelle Yeoh as Aleta Ogord, Krugarr, and Mainframe. I'd actually love to see a whole spin-off film with these characters! But it seems like we may end up seeing them in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
While talking to io9, Feige told them:
"You will not see [Charlie-27 and Aleta] until [Guardians] 3 at the earliest. One of the original ideas was, James [Gunn] was fleshing out the character of Yondu... and having the fun of tipping our hat to the original Guardians team. [It] just gives James another set of tools to play with as he’s piecing together future stories."
As for the return of Stallone as Stakar, we already know that there were bigger plans for him in the works about a month ago and while at the junket, Stallone said he's started reading the comics for preparation if it's something Marvel decides to pull the trigger on.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5, 2017.
