James Gunn On Shooting First SUPERMAN Scenes When "Superman Flees to The Ice Fortress"

James Gunn is currently shooting his Superman movie, and the first scenes that he’s working on are being shot in Svalbard, Norway. This is the location of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. While speaking to a local newspaper, Gunn also shared some details on the sequences currently being filmed, saying:

"We have filmed the first scenes, which are when Superman flees to the ice fortress. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But also the fact that you'll find a varied landscape here that you won't find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling."

A photo from the Norway set has been making the rounds online, which you can check out below. How freakin’ cool it would be to work as a location scout in the movie industry.

Gunn went on to share that some people have been coming by the set, but good luck seeing David Corenswet suited up as Superman. Security is tight.

"We have had some who have been curious, yes, who have stood and watched. But that's perfectly fine. And that's a big difference. Because being interested in just watching is something completely different than when you have people trying to sneak into the set to take pictures that they can make money from by selling online."

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
