George R.R. Martin Says There Are Eight GAME OF THRONES Spinoffs in the Works
It was recently shared by HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys, that they always have scripts in development for the Game of Thrones franchise. He said at the time: “We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring. I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything, but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.”
Until now, we didn’t know exactly how many Game of Thrones spinoffs were actually in development. George R.R. Martin has been keen on making more Game of Thrones spinoff shows, and during an appearance at Festival Bang, he revealed that he had eight other spinoffs in development. He said:
"In television, we have the new show, House of the Dragon, which has just finished filming its second season, and we're going to be planning for the third season soon. But I also have like eight other spin-off shows that we're developing. The Dunk and Egg show has been greenlit. The others, not yet, but we're still working on them."
The Dunk and Egg series is titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is set a "century before the events of Game of Thrones, [when] two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
Martin did not confirm which of his other stories the other spinoffs would follow. But some of the previously mentioned projects include The Sea Snake, Ten Thousand Ships, The Golden Empire, Flea Bottom, Aegon the Conqueror, and Snow, following Jon Snow’s story after the events of the Game of Thrones finale.
With all of these projects in development, no wonder Martin has finished his Winds of Winter novel. I’ll be surprised if he ever does finish it.
