George R.R. Martin Always Wanted To See a GAME OF THRONES and WESTWORLD Crossover

The most recent episode of HBO’s Westworld saw a brief cameo of a couple of familiar faces that Game of Thrones fans might have recognized. The showrunners of the epic fantasy series, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, played a couple of Delos technicians who were discussing how to bring a dragon to Costa Rica. 

Game of Thrones and Westworld have both been huge hits for HBO and George R.R. Martin wanted to combine those two shows with a crossover. While speaking with Variety, Westworld showrunner Jonathan Nolan revealed that Martin had pitched a crossover idea long before this episode. He explains:

“George had consistently since the first season said, ‘We’ve got to do a tie-in with Game of Thrones.’ People forget that George was originally a TV writer and he came up in the TV world in which you’d occasionally have these crossover shows, which the fans would fucking freak out over.”

So, how would have the two shows crossed over? Well, in 1973’s Westworld movie, Delos featured a Medieval World. According to Martin, that scenario would have perfectly fit with a Game of Thrones story. Nolan went on to talk about Benioff and Weiss coming in for the scene, saying:

“If he lived in Los Angeles, we would surely have insisted that he come and hang out on our set as well. But the crossover with the existing Medieval World in the original [Westworld] movie [released in 1973] was just irresistible. And the amount of people, starting with George, who over the years had pitched some version of a crossover. We just — we couldn’t resist. And [David and Dan] were incredibly good sports about coming down.”

Nolan went on to confirm that the dragon from Westworld Episode 3.02 was really Drogon. While this is cool and something Game of Thrones fans might have appreciated, It would have been a lot more interesting to see a bigger Game of Thrones–Westworld crossover. What do you think?
