GAME OF THRONES Spinoff Series Project NINE VOYAGES Is Now Going to Be Animated
Warner Bros. and George R.R. Martin are collaborating on several Game of Thrones spinoff projects right now. He previously revealed that he had eight other spinoffs in development. That’s on top of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.
One of the eight projects that has been in development is Nine Voyages, and it was initially being developed as a live-action series. Martin has revealed that it’s now being developed as an animated series. He recently said on his blog:
"As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE. None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talents attached. Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved."
He then went on to specifically talk about Nine Voyages and why it’s now being developed as an animated series:
"Work on the other two animated projects continues apace, however…and meanwhile, we have moved NINE VOYAGES, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation. A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There's a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway."
The Nine Voyages story refers to “the great voyages at sea made by Corlys Velaryon aboard the Sea Snake ship. Velaryon journeyed to places including Pentos, Dragonstone and around the bottom of Westeros as well as to Lys, Tyrosh and Myr. He reached the fabled lands of Yi Ti and Leng, whose wealth doubled that of the House Velaryon, and him and the Ice Wolf headed north searching for passage around the top of Westeros, only to find frozen seas and icebergs as big as mountains.”
As Martin points out, none of the animated projects have gotten the greenlight yet, but maybe one day one of them will see the light of day. Nine Voyages seems like it would make for an epic animated series!
