Producer Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) recently sat down with Bloody Disgusting and offered a little update on Legendary Entertainment’s upcoming installment of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. He reveals some new details and confirms that this movie will be a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original 1974 classic and that it will feature old man Leatherface.

Alvarez said, “It is a direct sequel, and it is the same character. It is old man Leatherface.” He also went on to tease that the film will incorporate practical effects, saying:

“Everything is classic, old school gags. A lot of the approach that we had with Evil Dead – never VFX, to do everything on camera. It’s a very old school approach to filmmaking. Vintage lenses… it’s very similar to the original film.”

That’s actually pretty exciting to hear! I love it when horror films put a focus on using practical effects to bring their terrorizing stories to life.

The new movie is being directed by David Blue Garcia (Tejano) and it was written by Chris Thomas Devlin. This sequel “returns to the roots of the Hooper and Kim Henkel creation that was considered one of the scariest films of its era, even though most of the splatter was implied and not shown.”

The tagline for the film is, “In 1974, the world witnessed one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history. In 2021, the face of madness returns.”

The original movie followed two siblings, and three of their friends en route to visit their grandfather’s grave in Texas. On their journey, they end up falling victim to a family of cannibalistic psychopaths and must survive the terrors of Leatherface and his family.

While I haven’t really cared for any of the more recent Texas Chainsaw films, I’m actually curious about this one and I hope it’s good!
