Christopher Nolan Says His Batman Films Benefited Because He Had Time In Between Them
In recent years there seems to be a constant barrage of superhero films coming out, from Marvel to the recent surge in DC superhero films, it can be easy to forget that Christopher Nolan’s last superhero movie in The Dark Knight saga was only released five years ago. Remember how great those were? Compared to most of what we've seen since then, they almost seem to be Oscar-worthy. Nolan says more than time and quality separate his films from all the work that’s come out since.
While Nolan was speaking at a BAFTA event in London, he revealed that his superhero films were the last time such a big-budget franchise had what he calls the “luxury” of time.
“That’s a privilege and a luxury that filmmakers aren’t afforded anymore. I think it was the last time that anyone was able to say to a studio, ‘I might do another one, but it will be four years.’ There’s too much pressure on release schedules to let people do that now, but creatively it’s a huge advantage. We had the privilege and advantage to develop as people and as storytellers and then bring the family back together.”
Unlike current productions, Nolan was able to make passion project movies of his own between every Batman film he made. First Batman Begins, then The Prestige. Then The Dark Knight, followed by Inception, before the final Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. One could argue that Nolan's time away from the caped crusader improved each sequel. Even though the story was carried on, each film feels distinct from the previous.
