Chris Pine Says The STAR TREK Film Franchise "Feels Cursed" and He is Frustrated with It

We recently shared how J.J. Abrams is excited about Star Trek 4 and that the creative team has come up with, what they feel, is a compelling story. He said, “it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.”

Well, Star Trek star Chris Pine has a very different outlook on the Star Trek film franchise, and he’s very frustrated with it. In a new interview with Esquire, the actor explained that he feels the franchise is cursed, saying:

"After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton, [Yelchin, who played Chekov] passed away, I don’t know, it just seemed..." He added later that the franchise "feels like it’s cursed.”

Pine went on to share that he doesn’t know anything about Star Trek 4’s future. He said: "In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors."

He went on to talk about his frustration, saying: "I would say it’s frustrating. It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created – I just can’t do it. I don’t have the energy."

I can see why he’s frustrated! Abrams and Paramount have been trying to get a fourth Star Trek movie off the ground for years, but it’s never really gained any real momentum.
