A Horror Movie Project on Kickstarter, SHELBY OAKS, Blows Past $1 Million

A few weeks ago, YouTube film critic and filmmaker Chris Stuckmann launched a Kickstarter for a horror movie titled Shelby Oaks that he wanted to make, and it has blown past $1 million in funding. This makes it the most funded horror film project on Kickstarter, which has got to be pretty cool for the creative team involved.

Stuckmann will direct the film from a script that he wrote and it’s based on an internet mystery about a group of missing paranormal investigators.

The film tells the story of a fictional mid-2000s U.S. investigative team called The Paranormal Paranoids. “Multiple found-footage videos surfaced online last year that prompted horror and ARG (alternate-reality game) fans to speculate about the veracity of the case and the whereabouts of the investigators. One video appeared to show the abduction of one of the group, known as Riley.”

This is the synopsis for the film:

Shelby Oaks is a horror film about missing paranormal investigators (the paranormal paranoids), the dark legacy they uncovered, and the far-reaching effects their investigation has as Mia searches for her sister Riley, the lead paranormal investigator, 12 years later.

As Mia uncovers new and disturbing leads related to Riley’s disappearance, she uncovers evidence of a hidden supernatural evil dating all the way back to her and Riley’s childhood.

With the project having Kickstarter success, it’s caught the attention of the studios and they’ve come knocking. Stuckmann says: “It’s so crazy, I don’t know what to say. We can already make the movie in the way we want to. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Two big studios have reached out to read the script. If they take it, it would change everything again.”

This has got to be such a cool experience! Aaron B. Koontz of Paper Street Pictures is producing the film, which will use a combination of documentary, found footage and traditional film footage styles. Influences include Lake MungoThe Blair Witch Project and Zodiac.

The project is set to start production in May in Cleveland. I’m curious to see how this film turns out!
